Rights Verification

Public domain — strong basis from author death in 1944
Term expired under ordinary life-plus-70 analysis; historical transitional rules may make expiry earlier
PD-Japan / PD-1996 / PD-Art — as described in the supplied source assessment; verify the live file record
PD-Art is a Commons classification, not a separate museum permission letter
LOW RISK — subject to source-fidelity and digital-file provenance review
2026-11-05

The original artwork and the digital scan are evaluated separately. The museum’s own image delivery terms have not been independently confirmed in this record. No CC BY-SA obligation is inferred for the claimed public-domain source; that does not clear rights in a separately created modern derivative image.

05

Copyright Term & Artist Identity

Research on Utagawa Kunimatsu identifies Kōshū (珖舟) as one of the artist’s names and records his life dates as 1855–1944. For a known individual author, the ordinary 70-year post-mortem calculation gives an end date of 31 December 2014 (at the latest under the simplified calculation), with public-domain status in Korea no later than 1 January 2015. Japan’s earlier transitional history does not extend this work’s ordinary protection into the present.

This is a provenance and rights assessment rather than a judicial or institutional legal clearance.

Artistic Adaptation

ALL THAT COINS may document contemporary recoloring, cleaning, cropping, background work, typography and paper-holder layout as separate artistic adaptation records. Preserve the source artwork unchanged, retain creation dates and files of the new work, and do not label a newly generated image as an exact original.
