The Bank of Korea introduced the 500 Won coin on June 12, 1982. Its principal design features a flying crane, while the reverse carries the denomination, year and central bank inscription.
The introduction of the 500 Won coin responded to increasing demand for coins, including expanded use of coin-operated machines, and helped replace the 500 Won banknote with a more durable circulation coin.
