Young Tree Side
The young-tree motif is paired with the national inscription and the denomination. Japan Mint says the artwork was selected through a public design competition for the new aluminum 1 Yen coin.
Numeral & Shōwa Date Side
The opposite face bears the numeral 1 and a year inscription using the Shōwa era. The date on this issue is 昭和三十五年.
Historical Context
The aluminum 1 Yen coin first circulated in 1955. Japan Mint historical materials describe the decision to reintroduce this small denomination after the earlier brass version had been discontinued.
